Playing the startup game with Geometrify, probably going mad

Pushing the limits of my mental health

Past 3 weeks have been crazy. Crazy depressing and stressful, trying to push Geometrify forwards, in a rushed mad man craze feeling of trying to reach a goal of releasing our new demo and crowdfunding campaign on 11.11.15, in order to match with the release of GeoKone on 11.11.11 (ha, that post has 11 comments)

And then realizing all this was just some imaginary deadline we had setup for ourselves, and that our direction is not exactly aligned on what is possible to implement right now. Gah.

I have been driving myself to the limits, drinking too much black tea, coffee, then needing something to calm me down after that, and continuing this vicious cycle until I was completely exhausted and not even remembering who I am anymore. This completely drained me physicall and mentally, and I was ready to give up the whole thing.

But then suddenly, I saw something in the midst of it all ..

A diamond shines in the darkness

In this self developed chaos shit storm, a diamond of perfection shone in the midst of it all:

Diamond in the Center

Diamond in the Center

Looking at it, just observing, and using GeoKone while being in the darkness I could see it more clearly. GeoKone has helped to suppress depression, to channel my self in the darkest moments so many times that I really wish I could somehow bring this program to the masses better. There I was again, creating art with GeoKone, feeling like shit, when suddenly I could see beauty coming out of darkness, forming slowly, reminding me that there is always a solution, even if I’m not seeing it in the middle of all the crap flying around.

Not sure if this can be seen only by travelling to the centre of it all, going through all that chaos around it first, or is there an easier way maybe ? Who knows. I dont know. I can read a thousand books, hear a thousand stories, and none are the one I am travelling. There are no ready answers or solutions to those walking their own path.

Startup mantras

I hope I don’t have to do this again ever. So that I might learn when to just keep calm, and focus on the task at hand, and not project into the future to fulfill some deadline that might as well be total bullshit in 2 weeks.

Fail fast, fail often. If you fail at first, try again. These are the mantras repeated in the startup world, and I can see now why. This has been a total surrender trip since 2012 december when I left my dayjob and pursued GeoKone full time.

My psyche has been put to the test, still working alone as programmer on Geometrify. Not having anybody to talk to on the technical aspect daily, not having anybody to wait at the workplace for me, or not anybody to even expect me to be there at time. It can get very depressing.

And still, the comments from people who have tried our first demo (which will be released at some point for the Oculus DK1, hopefully) like “most interesting usage of VR”, or “most deep experience of geometry”, or the mind baffling comment after a private demo “I realized what happens after I die”, these keep me going.

Glimpses to another world

Yeah, somebody saw glimpses of what happens when he dies by just trying our demo.

Think about that for a while. Let it sink in.

The possibilities with this project are endless. And yet, how to communicate this what we are buildling, seems impossible. There are no words to describe it. It slips through the rationality and structure of words. Like a spiritual experience, it is really difficult to share.

And this has been our challenge for the whole time we have been developing Geometrify Experience. How to communicate this to people, when it is really personal, can be meditative, immersive, but can also not be meditative, can just be annoying for minority of people trying it out, or it can be something completely different for each person.

Catching small fish

I think we have been trying to catch a too big of a fish, we now need really to narrow down our grids and focus on something that can be also implemented, and explained, and still utilizing our top of the line geometry engine, which might I say, is getting really nice.

I’m starting to get the hang of C++11 finally, and OpenGL too, so things are starting to look good on the technical side.

Still, no funding, no coding partners, although I have help from many people now, and we are now an officially registered Co-Op in Finland now, so a lot of progress happening also!

I am hopeful to continue working. Fail fast, fail often, get up, grind up, fuck that shit up and show them that following our hearts something truly extraordinary can be achieved!

Natural High from Using GeoKone.NET ^_^

Lately I’ve been realizing what GeoKone.NET actually is and why it is so addictive in some senses. I many times have noticed that when I create geometry with GeoKone, my mind is being surprised by the results and it receives a prize in the form of endorphines or something, the feeling is like discovering Something Completely New within somewhere that it should not be, interweaved between the different connecting geometries, hidden, waiting for me to unravel it.

GeoKone Is A Tool For Expressing Energy

To This.. GeoKone Is A Tool For Expressing Energy!

When exploring these seemingly simple geometrical shapes, with GeoKone you can almost like play a game of seek and hide, by zooming in and out of the formations, changing parameters and seeing how they connect for completely new connections. It’s like a constant Aha!” feeling in the brain, like the mind is seeing new things that weren’t there before and it brings a child like joy to me to explore these forms.

Geometry Makes New Connections

Geometry Makes New Connections

I have witnessed and heard about this same feeling with other people so many times now, that I am really happy to see that others beside me also see this effect. It is almost intoxicating, and in some senses it is, as how I see is that our brains create new connections somehow when they are given Natural Geometry to explore. It is like connecting the neural networks withing us, connecting the dots to create new connections and see things in a new way. Same as with music connecting new things, also visuals can do the same thing, especially if we are expressing ourselves in the process.

This can create almost like a intoxicated effect in the user, like my dear companion Anna said that she felt almost drunk from the effect.

I also found this Blog Post from Young, Broke and Awesome describing the effects:

“There are a lot of things that provoke my curiosity, but nothing works better than geometry. I love watching shapes evolve into beautiful patterns and designs. It is amazing how much beauty erupts from simple inputs and small changes of variables. In the midst of my computer explorations of the day, I stumbled upon this awesome little app called “GeoKone” after I googled “Geometry generator”. I became intoxicated by the program. I made so many different shapes and patterns in a matter of seconds using simple commands.”

I would love to understand this effect more and where it comes from, and what it feels like. So, if you have noticed the same kind of effects, of achieving some kind of natural high or otherwise altered state of mind while using GeoKone, I would be happy to hear. Best shoes ever .. and socks to match!

My Vibrams, after 3 months of use and no washing ..

My Vibrams, after 3 months of use and no washing ..

Now, first things first, I don’t like advertisements. In fact, I loathe advertisers and their brainwashing with false images. But, sometimes there’s a product that’s so good that you can’t do anything but recommend it to others. Also, I like to think grassroots advertising is the way to go instead of throwing masses of money at things. This year I discovered these great shoes, Vibram Fivefingers. They’re like nothing before. I thought to use them mainly for running only, but when I started wearing them, I quickly noticed that my old shoes feel like weights in my feet.

Particularly, I purchased the KSO (Keeps Stuff Out, I guess) models which have this layer over the table of the feet, so no stuff should get in. Although some stuff still gets in, especially when running over fine sand at the beach or like the stone gravel roads somewhere. Also, in the beginning stepping over sharp stones or roots will hurt you, but you learn to develop your running so that you wont step on these anymore like you could with your old shoes. Which makes sense, right? Don’t step on sharp things :)

These are probably the best shoes I’ve ever owned, and I’ve ran for like 7 years so I’ve owned a couple. Considering this, it’s sad that at least my models had problems with keeping their stitches. After of about 2 months of running with these, I ran over the beach and noticed afterwards that the right toe had an opened stitch and a there was a clear opening. Fortunately the place where I got them, 4Runners, agreed to repair the shoe for no fees, but still I had to be without them for a week and a half, which was painful ..

And now after using about 3 months almost exclusively, a week ago the other side popped too, at the same place but just left toe. I guess I have to go to the tailor, as today I manged to open up the little other hole that was in my right toe. This little hole was an accident by me, but now I came down a bunker and managed to open it up even more. Or maybe I just like to run, jump, tumble and in the same process damage my shoes too much :P

Ain't these cool? Rainbows rule.

Ain't these cool? Rainbows rule.

The only problem besides that is that you don’t want to wear your old shoes anymore :-D And the fact that your feet get pretty cold when the temperature drops.

But! There exists if not a solution, then at least an improvement to that. Injinji makes these awesome toesocks, and you can get them even in rainbow colors! I’ve wore them for a day, and went running with the Vibrams too, and they are a perfect fit. You lose a bit of the sense of the ground, but you gain with warmth and general softness. Also you won’t get blisters so easily, because the material is made that way. It dries fast too. I ordered mine from ZombieRunner. Be sure to google for a discount coupon.

Anyway, thats about it. Running with the Fivefingers is just so much more natural than with traditional shoes. You really get a feeling for the environment you are in. And what’s cool is, you can sit in a lotus position with the shoes still on! I like to run intuitively through the city, forests, rocks and generally everywhere where I feel like going. Then I like to stop for a while and meditate, observer the environment and feel the ease of getting into the zone. Totally recommended. Just try them out first in the shop, jump around, try different things :)

P.S. people constantly wonder about the shoes, I’ve got glances, questions, laughs, laughs out loud, hellos and conversation openers always when I go somewhere where people gather.. which is a plus too :)

Awesome Sacred Geometry and Meditation visualisator

Sacred Geometry

Sacred Geometry

This is amazing. Remember to do the breath exercises and use headphones for the full effect. You can start the wheel from the play button when you feel like it. Try not to focus on anything but the geometry that is happening. Or you can try kinda looking through it or not focusing on anything. Looking with the edge of your eye also gives interesting effects :) But be careful if you have epilepsy!
